Business Community Helps Replace Snyder Hall

UCC Snyder Replacement Project news v2

“Three Companies Donate Lumber to Reconstruction Project”

ROSEBURG, Oregon – When a campus and a community are rocked by tragedy, it takes partnerships from all over the area to recover and rebuild. As Umpqua Community College (UCC) works to replace Snyder Hall, the College is doing it with invaluable community and local business support.

“This reconstruction project is important in many regards, and is considered by many to be a necessary part of the healing process,” Jess Miller, UCC’s Director of Facilities, said.

The $4.25 million project started on the UCC campus in June after being awarded to DSL Builders of Salem. The 9,500 square-foot, single-story building will have five classrooms, eight offices, common areas, and basic amenities. In order to stay within budget, Miller looked for additional opportunities to help offset the new building’s overall costs, and three companies came through with donations:

  • Swanson Group in Glendale donated more than $5,500 worth of plywood
  • Murphy Plywood in Rogue River donated more than $8,300 of plywood
  • Roseburg Forest Products donated more than $32,700 in Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL)

The new building’s redesign includes the use of LVL beams which support the entire building and roof. Roseburg Forest Products was the first company to offer up the beams because it believes in the value of education and supports Snyder Hall’s reconstruction.

“UCC is part of the beating heart of the community,” Rebecca Taylor, the communications director at Roseburg Forest Products, said. “Since we prioritize donations that impact community skills and development, I see us always partnering with UCC. We also rely on UCC for our employment base, so we are more than happy to give back in any way that will make the campus an inviting, safe place for students.”

The reconstruction project is expected to be complete in March 2018. UCC has made a conscious decision not to participate in any stories regarding this project until the building is complete. The College believes this is not a time to celebrate; it is a time to recover and rebuild.
