UCC graduate, Daryl Oberman, rolls with the punches and comes out on top.
Daryl Oberman experienced the common saying “things don’t always go according to plan” when the company he had been with for almost 20 years, and had planned to retire with, shut down. With a family to support, Daryl needed a new plan, and made the decision to go back to school hoping that an Associate’s Degree in Business would lead him to more success.
As a student Daryl admits his academic pursuits were far from stellar. With 25 years between high school and UCC, he anticipated a rough transition back into an education setting. Once on campus he acclimated fairly quickly and took advantage of UCC’s many resources such as the tutoring lab and the library. He also found great help in class study groups. While UCC gave Daryl much support, he says he could not have done it without the love and support of his wife.
UCC staff also impacted Daryl’s educational journey. Daryl credits Associate Business Professor, Toni Clough, was a major influence, often showing her faith in him and giving him encouragement. Daryl also credits UCC instructor Brandon Polamalu, for teaching the writing class in a way that made sense and was not intimidating.
Daryl graduated in 2012 with a 3.93 GPA and his AAS in Business Technology-Entry Management. He is now a Licensed Hearing Aid Specialist at Costco and says he loves his job; he not only gets to work for a great company, but he gets to help people every day! Daryl sums up his student success this way, “UCC instilled study habits that helped me get through my apprenticeship program and licensee tests and presented me with the opportunity to set a good example for my daughters”. He goes on to say, “You only get out of college what you put into it. You can start by showing up to class and being proactive about using UCC’s resources."
