UCC women's basketball team ranked #5 on nation's junior/community college division academic honor roll.
ROSEBURG, Oregon – Umpqua Community College (UCC) is celebrating a national off-the-court victory with its women’s basketball team. While the team is accustomed to achieving success on the court, this year the team is also celebrating a significant victory in the classroom. Out of 17 eligible institutions in the nation’s junior/community college division, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) ranked the team #5 on its academic honor roll.
“This recognition is definitely the result of a team effort that required everyone to have a good year in the classroom,” Dave Stricklin, UCC’s women’s basketball coach, said. “We put a major emphasis on academics starting with our very first team meeting, and constantly talk about the importance of doing our very best in the classroom throughout the year.”
Teams are nominated for the honor by the WBCA-member head coach, and must have a 3.000 or better Grade Point Average (GPA). The UCC women’s team overall GPA this past year was 3.335. Some of the team’s top academic performers include:• Margaret Anderson, 4.0
• Ashley Backen, 3.97
• Bria Butler-Thames, 3.92
Team members are required to participate in eight hours of study hall and/or tutoring each week. Stricklin regularly checks in with their instructors.
“Next year we will have three high school valedictorians on our team, so we are expecting another good year both in the classroom and on the court,” Stricklin said.
